This image is located at the Apollo Lunar Surface Journals Home Page under "Fun Pictures". I am pretty sure it is a gag image probably made for Command Module Pilot Dick Gordon so he could say he was there on the surface with them.
The (tongue firmly in cheek) statement by David Harland is the dead give away clue along with the actual image name listed. If you have any information regarding the background of this image please e-mail me and let me know the story behind it. As far as I have found in all the mission data there were not ever three men on the moon at any one time or the provisions to accommodate three.
If you notice at the NASA web site the image depicting a third astronaut does not have a numbered name that can be referenced as the second or original image has. The upper hoaxed image look like a cropped version of the original below. If you study the two images they are the same frames, notice the cross hairs throughout the image and compare the locations in each image of the cross hairs they match exactly. So what we have here is probably a party gag gift photo made just for the crew of Apollo 12. Those out there running a muck claiming the entire Apollo project was a hoax and the landings never took place are holding up this picture as proof of such a hoax. I would imagine there are allot of suckers out there buying into this as there is one born about every minute or so you know. The following is the caption that accompanied the image.
David Harland (tongue firmly in cheek) has released a previously unknown Apollo 12 picture of Al Bean. The picture was taken by Pete Conrad, who's reflection is clearly visible in the center of Al's faceplate. Note, however, the reflection of a third astronaut, presumably Command Module Pilot Dick Gordon. What is amazing about this picture is the apparent fact that the Apollo 12 crew was able to keep secret Gordon's presence on the lunar surface for so long a time. The picture is similar to AS12-49-7278
